ALBUQUERQUE — October 1, 2019 — Yearout Energy, an Energy Services Company (ESCO) headquartered in Albuquerque, is pleased to announce that they were associated with four of the eight awards presented at the New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers and New Mexico Energy Services Coalition first annual joint conference.
YE was honored to be part of the following awards this year:
- Young Energy Professional of the Year – Carla Dozal
- Energy Engineer of the Year – Ian Montaño
- Small GESPC Project of the Year – Texico Municipal Schools
- Large GESPC Project of the Year – Bernalillo County Municipal Detention Center

The awards ceremony was the culmination of a day-long conference for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and resource conservation projects and professionals in New Mexico. As the Private Co-Chair of the NM Energy Services Coalition, Alex Montaño, vice president of project development for Yearout Energy, and President of the NM Association of Energy Engineers, Danny Alkon, project development engineer for Yearout Energy had the honor of hosting the event and presenting the awards.
Young Energy Professional of the Year – Carla Dozal
The Young Energy Professional of the Year award is presented to an individual with a maximum age of 35 who has made outstanding contributions to the energy industry and community.
This year’s recipient is Carla Dozal. Carla is a Project Assurance Engineer at Yearout Energy. Carla has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico Tech (NMT), and an AA in Construction Management from CNM. Carla is a CEM with AEE and has been working in the energy industry for the past 6 years. Carla currently serves as the Vice President of the New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers.
In the past year, Carla has supported the development of approximately $50M in new projects and has validated the performance of several projects previously implemented with a guaranteed savings of more than $1.0M per year.
Energy Engineer of the Year – Ian Montaño
The Energy Engineer of the Year award is presented to an individual for outstanding accomplishments in promoting the practices, principles, and procedures of energy engineering. The recipient must hold an active CEM certification through AEE.
This year’s recipient is Ian Montaño. Ian is a Project Development Engineer at Yearout Energy. He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico Tech, is an NM licensed professional engineer, a CEM, and has 12 years of experience in the Construction and Engineering industry. He is currently on the board of NMAEE.
Over the past 18 months, Ian has led the development of approximately $50M across several groundbreaking GESPC projects in New Mexico, including Texico Municipal Schools, Socorro Consolidated Schools District, NMDOT and NMDWS.
Small GESPC Project of the Year – Texico Municipal Schools
The Small GESPC Project of the Year award recognizes an outstanding energy management project below $5.0M that has had a significant impact on reducing climate change and was substantially completed in the past 18 months.
Texico Municipal Schools (TMS) is a small district comprised of approximately 170,000 sq ft of the permanent building situated on a shared campus in Texico, NM. TMS was the first K-12 School District to complete a GESPC project under the renewed state program. Their leadership has helped to pave the way for other districts to undergo GESPC projects, some already in the construction phase and others in development.
TMS implemented a $2.1M GESPC Project in 2019 which reduced district energy consumption by 30% and annual environmental impact by 330,000 lbs CO2.
The project scope included:
- Upgrading nearly 1,800 lighting fixtures to LED Technology with enhanced controls in classrooms, providing a 60% reduction to existing lighting loads
- Replacing single-pane windows with new double-pane intruder-resistant windows on several schools
- Remediating nearly 33 sq ft of existing air leakage
- Upgrading the electrical service at several facilities
- Replacing 66 existing swamp coolers with new high efficiency VRV heat pumps including new web-accessible control
Large GESPC Project of the Year – Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center
The Large GESPC Project of the Year award recognizes an outstanding energy management project above $5.0M that has had a significant impact on reducing climate change and was substantially completed in the past 18 months.
The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center or MDC is a 500,000 sq. ft. correctional facility built in 2002 and situated on 155 acres located west of Albuquerque, NM. In 2019, Bernalillo County engaged in a $13.9M guaranteed energy savings performance contract (GESPC) with Yearout Energy to reduce utility and operational expenditures, address deferred maintenance issues and increase security at their main facility.
The project resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in annual utility costs, as well as a reduction in annual CO2 emissions by over 7.1 million lbs.
The project scope included:
- Replacing 7,000 fixtures with new LED lighting and controls
- Installing 330-kW DC solar photovoltaic system
- Converting boiler plant to use waste gas from nearby landfill for heating
- Replacing over 1,000 tons of cooling
- Replacing 120,000 sq ft of roofing with added insulation
- Remediating 90% of duct air leakage
- Optimizing performance of 175 terminal units
- Installing 30 high-efficiency electrical transformers
- Installing evaporative pre-cooling on 960 tons of cooling
- Upgrading vacuum sanitation system with variable-speed drives and high-efficiency motors
- Adding a new computer room air conditioning (CRAC) unit with air-side economizer
- Weather stripping 100 exterior doors
- Installing 8,000 sq ft of phase change material
